The President of the Tribunal is appointed by the Lord Chancellor and must be a barrister or solicitor of at least seven years' experience.
The current President, Rosemary, Lady Hughes, is a solicitor and was appointed to succeed Mr Trevor Aldridge QC in September 2003. She was formerly in practice as a criminal advocate in Magistrates Courts and served as a Deputy Metropolitan Stipendiary Magistrate for five years. She was appointed as a part-time Chairman of the Tribunal in 1995 and now holds a similar appointment in the Care Standards Tribunal. She is a widow with three grown up sons and three grandchildren. She is a Deputy Lieutenant for Cambridgeshire, a Chapter Canon of Ely Cathedral and has been a governor of a maintained special school for many years.
